Blue Plate Special: Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Nirvana, Radio Legends, Eric Clapton and more

Blue Plate Special

Monday, 4-27

It was Casey Kasem’s birthday! He was a radio icon who helped usher in list format shows like the “Top 10 Songs of Such and Such…” No, that’s not what it was really called. I didn’t look up his actual shows just now, but you get the point. We human beings really love counting down on lists. VH1 and MTV took that formula and ran with it on linear television of the 2000s, and the modern day versions like WatchMojo and WhatCulture on YouTube are still testaments to this concept of us just loving the hell out of counting and lists. Anyway, since Casey was a radio legend, we honored him with three songs about radio by The Ramones, Van Halen, and Steely Dan.

Tuesday, 4-28

It was the 53rd anniversary of Pink Floyd’s album Dark Side of the Moon reaching #1 on the Billboard album chart. It holds the longest record for non-consecutive appearances, sitting at around 996 at the time of writing this blurb. Obviously we had to play some songs from the album, so we played the entirety of side two sans “Money” because we listen to that enough on 93.7. Also, we have a time limit for things like the Blue Plate Special.

Wednesday, 4-29

It was the 45th anniversary of the release of Van Halen’s Fair Warning. We rocked “Mean Street”, “Unchained”, and “So This Is Love.”

Thursday, 4-30

Today marked the 35th annivesrary of Nirvana signing to DGC Records, which led to the release of their album Nevermind, one of the most influential albums of the last three decades. It influenced a wave of grunge music in the mainstream, and it encouraged more industry execs to take a chance on alternative music as a whole, which became seemingly more viable overnight. It could be argued that Nirvana was responsible for the 90s music scene we have today, although there are many bands that contributed to that sound as a whole. Anyway, we played songs from the album: “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “In Bloom”, and “On A Plain.”

Friday, 5-01

We were gonna play songs about May since it was May 1st, but we pivoted to songs about rain since it was wet as f*** recently. We featured songs from Guns ‘n’ Roses, Eric Clapton, and The Who. Try to guess which ones. No, I didn’t forget them. I wrote them down. I just don’t feel like sharing.
