Blue Plate Specials – Hendrix, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Tom Petty and J. Geils Band

Blue Plate Special

Last week, Spenny delivered us handpicked, 3-course meals of musical history every weekday at noon! Here are all the stories you may have missed.

Monday 2-2

The Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1967 appeared at the Blue Pad Club in Darlington, England which was part of the Imperial Hotel Complex on Grange Road. The show was advertised as “Don’t miss this man who is Dylan, Clapton, and James Brown all in one.” After the show, as the roadies were loading up a van, one of Hendrix’s Fender guitars was stolen. This happened after a string of successes in the UK following his move overseas to help further his career. His popularity bloomed to the point where the United States could no longer ignore his talent and popularity.

Tuesday 2-3

in 2008, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performed during the halftime-show of Super Bowl XLII. They played ‘American Girl’, ‘I Won’t Back Down’, ‘Free Fallin” and ‘Runnin’ Down a Dream’. Okay, I didn’t play all of these ones on-air, but I did play the song Stevie Nicks and Petty did together.

Wednesday 2-4

In 1948, Alice Cooper was born. One of my favorite moments in my radio history was cohosting an interview with Cooper during an afternoon show I used to do with Matt Bearden. It was called COYÖTE, and it was a hell of a lot of fun. Shout out to the fans! Crack ‘em.

Thursday 2-5

In 1983, Def Leppard’s third album, Pyromania began a 92-week run on the Billboard charts. Although it failed to ever reach the top spot, it sold over six million copies in the US alone. 21 years later, the record received a rare Diamond certification by the RIAA. It’s definitely one of the most influential albums of the 19802, ushering in the unique sound that the British heavy metal movement was bringing to the airwaves.

Friday, 2-6

In 1982, The J. Geils Band scored their sole No.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with the cheeky single, “Centerfold” from their tenth album Freeze-Frame.

Simultaneously, the album also began a four-week run at the top of the Billboard 200.

Tune in all week for more Blue Plate Specials from Spenny, weekdays at Noon on KLBJ 93.7FM Austin.
