Tune in every weekday at 12PM for Spencer‘s Blue Plate Special, on 93.7 KLBJ-FM Austin
Monday 3/16
Supertramp, in 1979, released Breakfast in America. So, of course we played some ‘Tramp.
Tuesday 3/17
Irish bands for St. Paddy’s! We played a Thin Lizzy banger out of rotation, an obvious U2 song (since they’re the most popular Irish band in existence), and a song from Irish rockers Them. Always fun to feature a one-hit wonder or lesser known band.
Wednesday 3/18
It was the 54th anniversary of Neil Young’s (only) #1 US hit, “Heart of Gold”
Thursday 3/19
Jethro Tull released their 4th album Aqualung in 1971. We played all three songs from the album, which is a rare treat in radio nowadays. I’m surprised the boss signed off on that.
Friday 3/20
Pearl Jam; It was NBA basketball player Mookie Blaylock‘s 58th birthday. He played for the Nets, Hawks, and Warriors over a 13 year long career, leading the league in steals in two separate seasons. He also held the all-time Atlanta Hawks record in that category. For KLBJ’s purposes, all the members of Pearl Jam loved Mookie, so much so that they named their band after him. Once they signed to a record label (and following some legal challenges) they changed their name to Pearl Jam, but they still honored the basketballer by naming their first album after his jersey number, Ten.
