Blue Plate Specials – Bon Jovi, Metallica, Stones, Boston, Joe King Carrasco, Loverboy, The Kings

Blue Plate Special

Here’s what you missed last week during the Blue Plate Special, Monday – Friday with Spencer at Noon on KLBJ 93.7 FM Austin.

Monday, 3-2-26

We honored Jon Bongiovi’s birthday, though you know him professional as Jon Bon Jovi. The dude is 64 years old and still kickin’. He’s best known for his rock band, Bon Jovi, but he also branched out into acting during the 90s. I looked up some of his filmography, and it turns out he was in one of my favorite films from the early 2000s, U-571. It’s about a submarine crew in the 1940s, essentially. Lots of great actors. Check it out.

Tuesday, 3-3-26

We observed Metallica’s album Master of Puppets, which celebrated its 40th anniversary on this day. I think it goes without saying that this is one of the most important metal albums of all time. It solidified Metallica as masters of their craft and introduced a mainstream audience to the metal genre. Metalheads and music lovers alike got to experience some of the best songwriting to ever grace the extreme music scene. I may have my qualms with Metallica regarding the Napster litigation they pursued in the early 2000s, but as I’ve grown older and have come to understand how f***ed up most artists and musicians are treated by their financial overlords, it’s much easier to forgive when ya realize how special a work of art is to someone, and how awful it feels to have it wrested from your grasp.

Wednesday, 3-4-26

We listened to The Rolling Stones because on this day back in 1967 they went to #1 on the US singles chart with their song “Ruby Tuesday.” This was the band’s fourth #1 hit in the states, so of course I had to play it. Funnily enough the single was also paired with “Let’s Spend The Night Together”, but radio stations banned the song, making “Ruby Tuesday” the default single on the record. It’s pretty crazy to think back on how puritanical our culture was. ‘Cuz nowadays spending the night with someone is just good fun. It certainly isn’t the end of the world, like many in the past might have suggested. Anyway, enough judging the past. Moving on…

Thursday, 3-5-26

Today marked the 256th anniversary of the Boston Massacre, one of the most important days in American history and a formative event that led to the eventual declaration of independence from Great Britain. And, dare I say, perhaps the first mass shooting in our history? Five citizens were killed by British soldiers following a rowdy protest. Go read about it. It’s important. But how did we celebrate Boston and American history on the Blue Plate Special? Well, we played bands from Boston. Come on, now. We’re all about themes, baby.

Friday, 3-6-36

Friday’s theme was all about the weekend. I’m tired. You’re tired. We’re all looking forward to some time off. So why not listen to some songs that are about the weekend? Or, at the very least, have the word “weekend” in the song. We featured Joe King Carrasco and The Crowns, Loverboy, and a rare find from Canadian rockers The Kings. Shout out to my boss for that rare find by the way.

Anyway, come hang at noon weekdays. We’re doing Blue Plates daily as long as management lets us. ~Spencer
