Primus has dropped a surprise four-song EP, A Handful of Nuggs, which dropped just ahead of the launch of their expansive Claypool Gold tour. The release is available digitally now, while a limited-edition 12-inch vinyl version is scheduled to arrive July 22 through ATO Records.
The EP introduces “The Ol’ Grizz,” one of the first studio tracks recorded with new drummer John Hoffman, who joined the band following the departure of longtime percussionist Tim ‘Herb’ Alexander. The song delivers the warped, technically intricate blend of funk, metal, and psychedelic rock that has long defined Primus’ sound.
Also included is “Little Lord Fentanyl,” featuring Maynard James Keenan, along with a live performance of “Duchess (And The Proverbial Mind Spread)” captured in Philadelphia at the Mann Center. Rounding out the collection is a new rendition of Dio’s “Holy Diver,” featuring vocals from Puddles Pity Party.
The EP arrived the band launched the Claypool Gold tour, which unites three projects led by Les Claypool: Primus, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and Colonel Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. The 30-date run kicked off May 20 in Reno, Nevada, and continues through early July, promising rotating setlists and collaborative performances across the tour.
