KLBJ Rocked SXSW
KLBJ Rocks SXSW 2018
"Formed and based in Austin, Texas, Darkbird is the result of a collaboration between vocalist and songwriter Kelly Barnes, and lead guitarist and songwriter Brian Cole. The two shared an uncompromising vision for their band, which is now additionally comprised of Chris Spencer on bass, Michael Martinez on keys and electronics, and Ethan Yeager on drums. The band released their debut EP in late 2015, “I Remember Feeling My Fingers Slip”. The bands first single “Poison Arrows” gained popularity amongst their Texas fans and saw the band showcase at CMW (Canadian Music Week) in Toronto and Mondo.NYC in New York following the momentum of the release."
"From the start, Mobley's work has been marked by solitude, ingenuity, and a drive that could only be called obsessive. Whether you experience him on record or at one of his incredible concerts, the passion is palpable in every aspect. He writes, performs, & produces his music, designs his artwork, directs his videos, produces his multimedia live shows, and even builds new instruments to carry out his vision.
Over the past couple years, he's composed dozens of pieces for stage and television (with placements on HBO, Fox, and NBC), written and produced for other artists (LEV, Riders Against the Storm), played 200+ national tour dates (with the likes of Phantogram, JUNGLE, Mutemath, Robert Delong, & Wavves and at festivals like ACL, SXSW, CMJ, Savannah Stopover and Float Fest), and recorded (then scrapped) two whole albums in pursuit of the songs that would become his forthcoming full-length debut, Fresh Lies. The music -- which Mobley calls "post-genre pop" -- defies easy classification, drawing liberally (often simultaneously) from an array of musical traditions."
"Kathryn Legendre drives around Austin, with a GOD BLESS MERLE HAGGARD sticker on the bumper. You know, kind of like the "God Bless Johnny Cash" stickers, but her own take on it – custom. Her folks will tell you she's always gone against the mainstream. That encompasses Legendre's whole outlook on songwriting and, well, life.
Legendre thrives when she feels there's something missing. Therefore, she announces the follow up to her 2013 debut album Old Soul, and Summer 2014 single, "Have You Forgotten Me?" with the release of a new EP, Don't Give A Damn (released February 2016).
Reflecting on this newest tome of music, Legendre said that she took some risks with the EP, whether it was in lyrical content or trying to please certain audiences. “In the end, I went with honesty, and I don't give a damn if anyone likes it or not."
"Western Youth is a 6 piece band from Austin Texas that writes and plays original Americana/Folk/Rock and roll music."
"A girl, a guitar, and the truth."
"Cari Q’s fervor and enthusiasm for songwriting are qualities to be sought after in this era. Straightforward melodies accompany her resonant lyrics as she pushes the limits of contemporary pop music. Echoing her predecessors, Cari Q’s unique sound evokes memories of Janis Joplin and Loretta Lynn.
After releasing her debut EP, Solid Ground, in 2015 Cari has gone on to play internationally, traveling extensively in the UK over the past year. Her upcoming album showcases a bolder sound and matured voice that illustrates a songwriter with talent and wisdom well beyond her years. Backed by a band of incredible musicians, Cari Q is truly a force to be reckoned with on the scene in her hometown of Austin, TX and beyond."
"Ruby Jane is a prodigy violinist and singer/songwriter based in Austin, TX.
Smith’s list of accolades is astounding – boasting a steady stream of awards from the title of youngest person to play the Grand Ole Opry to touring as lead violinist for artists like Willie Nelson, Lady Gaga, Blues Traveler, Local Natives and performed alongside acts like Sheryl Crow & ZZ Top.
Since joining forces in 2015, her band Ruby Jane and The Reckless have received the prestigious Black Fret grant and have finished working on their debut album "In My Head" recorded in Austin’s own Bubble Studio with renowned producer Frenchie Smith (Gary Clark Jr., JET, Santana, Wild Child, Trail of The Dead).
Ruby Jane is currently working with well known pop producer Mario Marchetti out of Los Angeles on her new EP set to release in 2018.
With her combination of extraordinary musical abilities, breathtaking vocals, and hooky choruses, she is creating a new sound that breaches the limits of musicianship in modern day pop music."
"Tomar and the FCs is a Soul band from Austin, TX"
Marmalakes is the Austin, TX, group led by Chase Weinacht (guitar/songwriting) and Josh Halpern (drums/production), lifelong friends whose spirited intensity leaps from their recordings. Marmalakes released their debut EP in 2010, followed by well-received EP releases in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Please Don't Stop will be the band's debut full-length, and proves to be well worth the wait.
When Roses & Cigarettes released their debut album in May of 2015, singer Jenny Pagliaro and guitarist Angela Petrilli were anxious to get out into the clubs to promote it by playing the songs live. Those plans were put on hold in early July when Pagliaro was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer, and immediately began treatment. Jenny underwent two surgeries, 8 rounds of chemo and radiation only to have the cancer return again in September of 2016 – just prior to the band’s West Coast tour. Jenny is now at Stage IV, but is more determined then ever to beat the disease and keep making music with Roses & Cigarettes. “I have to take care of myself and get healthy – that’s my priority, but my music and the band will be an important part of that healing process.” Roses & Cigarettes formed in Los Angeles in 2013 when the country cover band that Pagliaro was singing in auditioned Petrilli for a vacant guitar position. The girls immediately bonded over their desire to perform original material and similar tastes in music – from the classics like Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles and Bonnie Raitt; to more contemporary artists like Patty Griffin, Sheryl Crow and Miranda Lambert. It was a mutual love of singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne and his song, “Roses and Cigarettes,” that inspired the name of the band. Roses & Cigarettes’ music is an eclectic blend of Roots, Rock, Americana, Country and Pop – the perfect recipe for the classic California sound. The band has sold out shows at Harvelle’s in Santa Monica and Second Stage at Hotel Café in Hollywood; and they have supported Jim Lauderdale, Luther Dickinson, Marc Broussard, Billy Bob Thornton and the Boxmasters, Radney Foster, The Record Company, Elizabeth Cook, and Amanda Shires among others. Roses & Cigarettes’ music has been featured on KLOS FM and KCSN FM in Los Angeles; and the girls are endorsed by Fender Guitars and D’Addario guitar strings. Roses & Cigarettes are currently in the studio in LA recording an acoustic record, which is due out early 2018. The band’s self-titled debut album is available on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora and most other digital outlets; and on their website: rosesandcigarettes.com.
"Eric James Tessmer, actually named after guitar giants Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, is an extraordinary guitarist, musician, singer and songwriter hailing from Austin, TX. He is widely considered one of the most vibrant guitarists to follow in the footsteps of blues-rock legends such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and his namesake predecessors. His live shows have captured audiences' attention across the United States as power-packed sessions of wickedly fast and precise licks that can light the house on fire without the need for lighter fluid.
Born and raised outside of the small town of Richland Center, Wisconsin, Tessmer began playing at a young age, inspired by his father and grandmother. In 2000, he moved to Austin at the age of 19 to play gigs with numerous musicians and bands, earning local credibility as he honed his craft of riffing with speed, power and control. He later formed his own power trio, the Eric Tessmer Band, in 2003. Through a battered '59 Fender Stratocaster producing vintage-correct tones, Eric kickstarts the engine left idling by guitar players of the past.
Known as one of the hardest working musicians in the area, Tessmer continues to travel the U.S., Canada and Europe. Creating his own brand of ‘blues-rock soul-chedelic’ sound, he has electrified festivals such as Montreal Jazz Fest, Summerfest, and MusikFest with dialed-in precision and delivered polished performances at clubs, pubs and venues across the land. Sharing the stage with notable musicians such as Dick Dale, Anders Osborne, Tab Benoit, Monte Montgomery, Gary Clark Jr. and Chris Duarte; Tessmer has created a buzz among the blues-rock community that is quickly swarming with devoted disciples.
