Fans of the Colbert Report were treated to a special surprise last night as Paul McCartney took the show over. A ten minute interview was followed by a special six-song performance in an hour-long special dedicated to the iconic rocker. The double length feature was appropriately titled “Stephen Colbert's Tribute to Having Paul McCartney on His Show, Featuring Paul McCartney, With Special Guest Stephen Colbert."
The two discussed Paul's transition from The Beatles into Wings, uncommon recording techniques, and at one point even sang an acapella duet of Fred Astaire's "Cheek to Cheek". McCartney’s stories showed insight into one of the best musical careers of all time, including the not-so-glamorous days of being packed into a van.
At one point, Stephen made note of the fact that both of them had worked under successful projects with Johns. An argument over the pronunciation of the word "schedule" followed by a rare apology from Stephen was received well by the studio audience.Following the interview, McCartney performed "I've Just Seen a Face", "Hi, Hi, Hi", "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kitel", "Listen to What the Man Said", followed by "Lady Madonna." Following the show, McCartney performed the song "Birthday" as a web exclusive.
